Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive correlational research was to examine factors related to the anxiety of pregnant women with a history of pregnancy loss. A convenience sampling was used to recruit 111 pregnant women with a history of pregnancy loss during pre- and natal periods attending antenatal care clinics of 3 hospitals, Suphan Buri province.  Data were collected from January to March 2018. Research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the obstetric history questionnaire, the Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory. Their reliability ranged between .82-.95. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s and Point biserial correlations were used to analyze the data.

The results showed that 49.5 % and 23.5% of the total sample had a moderate and a high level of anxiety, respectively. Social support was significantly negatively correlated with the anxiety (r = -.22, p < .05). However, other factors, including, gestational age of previous pregnancy loss, interpregnancy interval, gestational age of current pregnancy
and obstetrical complication were no correlation. These findings suggest that nurses in antenatal care unit should assess anxiety in pregnant women who had a history of pregnancy loss and provide nursing care by enhancing social support from family, friends and other networks for pregnant women in order to decrease anxiety during current pregnancy.
