Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to describe factors predicting maternal participation in caring for children with leukemia receiving chemotherapy at pediatric units of tertiary hospitals in the Eastern. Convenience sample included 84 mothers of children with leukemia newborn to 15 years old admitted to receiving chemotherapy. Data were collected during February to April 2018. Research instruments consisted of the demographic data and personal formation, the maternal participation scale, the maternal self-efficacy scale, the maternal-nurse communication and the nurse’s support. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the questionnaires were .90, .80, .81, and .90, respectively. Knowledge of maternal in caring for children with leukemia receiving chemotherapy by using KR-20 was .77. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation and Stepwise multiple regression analysis.

Results revealed that maternal self-efficacy of self-efficacy was significantly correlated with maternal participation (r = .377, p<.001) and could predict of maternal participation in caring for children with leukemia receiving chemotherapy accounted for 14.2 % (β = .377, t = 3.689, p<.001) Knowledge of maternal, the maternal-nurse communication and the nurse’s support could not predict of maternal participation (p >.05).These findings suggest that pediatric nurse and health care providers should encourage maternal self-efficacy for effectively maternal participation in caring for children cancer.
