The Effects of a Health Literacy Promotion Program on Coronary Artery Disease Preventive Behaviors and Serum Lipid Levels Among People with Dyslipidemia
Keywords:

This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of a health literacy promotion program on coronary artery disease preventive behaviors and serum lipid levels among people
with dyslipidemia. The sample was 62 people with dyslipidemia who came for an annual check-up at the out-patient department in one eastern regional hospital. The participants were randomly assigned into experimental (n = 31) and control (n = 31) groups. The experimental group received the health literacy promotion program, while the control group received usual care. The instruments included a record of demographic and health data and lipid profile, and coronary artery disease preventivebehavior questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, repeated measures ANOVA, independent T-tests, and Mann-Whitney U.
The results revealed that in the experimental group, mean scores of preventive behaviors at the 8th and 12th weeks were higher than at baseline and in the control group (p < .05). Mean scores of total cholesterol and LDL-C in the experimental group at the 8th and 12th weeks were significantly lower than at baseline and in the control group (p < .05). Mean scores of HDL-C and Triglycerides at the 12th week were not significant different between the experimental and control groups.
This study indicated that the health literacy promotion program resulted in improving coronary artery disease preventive behaviors among people with dyslipidemia. In addition, the program helped lower total serum cholesterol and LDL-C, which could prevent coronary artery disease in the future. Therefore, nurses and health care providers could use this program for people with dyslipidemia.
