An evaluation of the competency development program for nurse mentorship in Bangkok Hospital, KhonKaen

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the competency development program for nurse mentorship in Bangkok-KhonKaen Hospital by using the CIPP model, comprised of context, input, process, and products. Study participants were 16 newly assigned nurse mentors in the hospital, 17 novice nurses, 9 nurse administrators, 1 hospital medical director, and 4 nurse instructors teaching in this program. Study instruments were a guideline for focus group discussion and in-depth interview, a nurse mentorship competency questionnaire, a nurse mentorship attitude questionnaire, and a satisfaction questionnaire for performing roles of nurse mentors. Data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations and content analysis.
The results revealed that, regarding Context, the program objective was in accordance with the needs of the nurse mentorship competency development program. Regarding Input, nurse mentors and nurse instructors were ready to participate in this program. In addition, the nurse administrators and the hospital director provided supportive facilities. Regarding Process, seven learning modules were completed using various methods, such as class lectures, demonstrations, role-plays, and the practice of performing mentorship roles within the hospital. Each module was evaluated in terms of lessons learned. Regarding Products, nurse mentorship competency overall was at a high level, nurse mentorship attitude was at a good level, overall satisfaction for performing roles of nurse mentors was a high level, and the overall satisfaction for nurse mentor role performance as perceived by novice nurses was at a high level. This program could be applied to improve and develop nurse mentorship competency in both private and public hospitals.
