Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare reflective thinking behaviors of nursing students in a private university in Bangkok before and after receiving a Learning Management Through Reflective Thinking process. The sample was 48 fourth-year nursing students in a Psychiatric Nursing Practicum in academic year 2020.  The sample participated in reflective thinking group discussion at the end of the practicum class meeting once a week for 5 consecutive weeks. Research instruments included the reflection record form, reflective thinking questionnaire, and opinion towards benefit of reflection questionnaire.  Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and paired t-tests.

The results indicated that the nursing students’ post-test reflective thinking behavior scores (M = 3.36, SD = 0.28) were significantly higher than their pre-test scores (M = 2.51, SD = 0.36; p <.05). The mean score for benefits of the reflection was 3.54 (S.D. = 0.29). Therefore, the reflective thinking process should be applied for learning management in each class of a nursing practicum. The reflective thinking process could enhance intellectual skills relevant to self-awareness of student strengths and weaknesses and improve systematic analysis, which might lead to improving nursing quality of care.
