Abstract

This research aimed to study self-management behaviors and the related factors among older adults with coronary artery disease. The sample included 105 older adults aged 60 years and above diagnosed with coronary artery disease and undergoing treatment at the cardiology clinic, Somdej Phraborom Ratchathewi Hospital, Sriracha. Simple random sampling was used. Research instruments were the demographic data, health perception, knowledge about disease and self-management, self-efficacy perception, social support, and self-management behavior questionnaires. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation statistics.

The results revealed that the samples had higher mean scores in self-management behaviors (M = 67.17, SD = 6.85). Perceived self-efficacy, health perception, and knowledge about the disease and self-management behaviors were statistically positively correlated with self-management behaviors (r = .571, .428, .284, p < .01, respectively).

This study suggests that nurses and health care teams could apply these findings in planning appropriate care to encourage self-management behaviors among older persons with coronary artery disease, with an emphasis on perceived self-efficacy, health perception, and knowledge about disease and self-management.
