Abstract

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to examine the factors related to self-care behaviors among patients who underwent cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation at Rajprachasamasai Institute. This study included  260 patients who underwent cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation at the 7th postoperative. The sample was recruited using simple random sampling.  Data was collected using questionnaires that measured the levels of health belief, social support, and self-care behaviors between August 2022 and January 2023. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple regression analysis.

The findings showed that most participants were female (60.4%), with an average age of 62 years. The participants showed high levels of health belief, social support, and self-care behaviors of post-cataract intraocular lens surgery (mean = 4.17, SD = 0.41; mean = 3.74, SD = 0.56; and mean = 4.31, SD = 0.57, respectively). Furthermore, it was found that the severity of postoperative complications. Factors such as family members and nurses’ support and information gathering influenced the participants' self-care behaviors (β = .409, p < 0.01; β = .409, p < 0.01; β = .432, p < 0.01; β = -.339, p < 0.01; and β = .168, p < 0.01, respectively). These predictors could together explain 38.7% of variance in self-care behaviors of postoperative cataract patients with intraocular lens implant. (R2 = .387)

Based on the study's findings, it is recommended to pay attention to the patients’ health beliefs and to the factors associated with the severity of postoperative complications following cataract intraocular lens surgery to encourage appropriate self-care behaviors among patients in the postoperative period.
