Abstract

This descriptive phenomenological qualitative research aimed to explore the problems and knowledge needs regarding first aid for the elderly among caregivers. The participants were five elderly caregivers from the Bang Kaew municipality, Samut Prakan Province. Data were collected using qualitative interview guidelines, focus group discussions, and non-participatory observation. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The research findings revealed that:

The problems and knowledge needs regarding first aid for the elderly among caregivers were categorized into four 4 themes, including: 1) Experiences in Caring for the Elderly with Health Problems: This theme encompasses their experiences with common health issues such as dizziness, vertigo, falls, and seizures. 2) Existing first aid knowledge and skills: Caregivers possessed basic skills like cleaning small wounds, measuring blood pressure, performing finger-stick blood glucose tests, and observing abnormal symptoms. 3) Needs for first aid knowledge among the elderly: Caregivers requested training on real-life first aid problems, practical, hands-on workshops, small-group training, or training conducted by familiar instructors. 4) Expectations for knowledge development: All caregivers should have the opportunity to participate in hands-on training focusing on practical first aid skills they can perform themselves before transferring the elderly person to a hospital.

Thus, the findings from this research can serve as foundational data for designing a first aid training curriculum tailored to the specific situations and needs of elderly caregivers in Samut Prakan Province.
