Abstract

Introduction:  Currently, medical students are experiencing increased levels of depression, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected their learning and teaching experiences. After the COVID-19 pandemic, students may be at risk for their mental health. Medical school students may have a higher rate of depression, anxiety, and a lower quality of life than students in other fields due to the environment.

Objective: To study the prevalence and factors associated with depression and anxiety after the relaxation of COVID-19 measures among medical students at the Center for Clinical Medical Education, Surat Thani Hospital.

Method: This cross-sectional analytical study involves medical students registered in 2022 at the Center for Clinical Medical Education, Surat Thani Hospital.

Results: In this study, 81 respondents were examined, showing that 32 students experienced depression (39.50%), 57 students experienced depression (70.37%), and 39 experienced poor quality of life (48.14%). The multiple logistic regression identified several depression-related factors. 5th-year students had depression at a rate of 0.08 times compared to 4th-year students (Adj. OR 0.08; 95% CI 0.008-0.89), while students living alone had 0.12 times (Adj. OR 0.12; 95% CI 0.01-0.96). Additionally, those who had lost a close relative in the past year faced a substantially higher risk of depression (Adj. OR 31.02; 95% CI 2.53-384.57), as did individuals worried about going out (Adj. OR 57.41; 95% CI 4.97-662.39).Factors affecting anxiety include the following: females were 0.09 times experience worried (Adj. OR 0.09; 95% CI 0.10-0.90), 5th-year students were 0.02 times more worried compared to 4th-year students (Adj. OR 0.02; 95% CI 0.001-0.42), and 6th-year students were 0.10 times more worried (Adj. OR 0.10; 95% CI 0.001-0.31). Not exercising was associated with 0.09 times increase in anxiety (Adj. OR 0.09; 95% CI 0.01-0.075). Factors influencing the quality of life included the female gender and a poor quality of life, with 4.83 times higher Adj. OR 4.83; 95% CI 1.04-22.29).

Conclusion: Medical students exhibit a high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and declining quality of life. Factors contributing to these challenges include gender, year of study, lack of exercise, cohabitation, loss of a close relative, and concerns related to COVID-19, such as anxiety about going outside. Medical students must receive sufficient guidance to support their mental well-being. Implementing more proactive solutions is essential, necessitating an increased role for medical professors.
