Abstract

Falls represent a significant threat to the health and quality of life of community-dwelling older adults, particularly those living independently. This qualitative study aims to explore the experiences of fear of falling among the elderly within a community setting. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 18 elderly individuals selected via purposive sampling and subsequently analyzed using content analysis
The study revealed that the fear of falling among older adults manifested in three distinct domains: (1) psychological impacts of fear, characterized by embarrassment post-fall, anxiety, reluctance to depend on others, and the perception of falling as a sign of vulnerability; (2) behavioral modifications to mitigate fear, which included heightened health consciousness, a deliberate slowing down of daily routines, the reduction or cessation of specific activities, and the intake of dietary supplements; and (3) supportive needs for fear reduction, encompassing home environment modifications, mobility assistance, and education on fall prevention.
In conclusion, the fear of falling is an experience related to physical, psychological, and environmental determinants. Therefore, managing this issue should involve a holistic approach that integrates healthcare, family support, and creates a safe environment to promote a good quality of life and confidence in the community among the elderly.
