Abstract

This study aimed to examine the mental health status of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Mueang District, Chiang Rai Province. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 450 T2DM patients aged 18 years and older by using simple randomization from nine subdistrict health-promoting hospitals. The research instruments included (1) a general information questionnaire and (2) the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), which demonstrated an overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.94. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression. The results revealed that most participants were female, with a mean age of 66.51 years (SD = 8.80), and 91% were Buddhist. The prevalence of severe to extremely severe anxiety, depression, and stress was 25.60%, 17.10%, and 11.40%, respectively. Participants who were single, divorced, or widowed had a higher risk of depression than those who were married (OR = 2.01, 95% CI = 1.10-3.70). The findings underscore the need for healthcare professionals to recognize and address mental health problems among patients with T2DM, emphasizing preventive strategies and interventions to reduce the severity of psychological distress in this population
