Abstract

This cross-sectional correlational study aimed to examine the relationships among personal factors, stress levels, and coping strategies in patients with uncontrolled hypertension in Mueang District, Suphan Buri Province. A total of 133 participants were recruited. The research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the Suanprung Stress Test (SPST-20), and the Jalowiec Coping Scale (JCS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and chi-square test.
The results showed that most participants had a moderate level of stress (74.43%), followed by a high level (17.29%) and a low level (8.27%). The mean stress score was 33.5 (SD=7.69). Overall coping strategies were at a low level (M=1.90, SD=0.49). Among the coping dimensions, emotion-focused coping had the highest mean score (M=2.29, SD=0.66), followed by problem-focused coping (M=1.93, SD=0.62), and avoidance coping (M=1.62, SD=0.41).
Correlation analysis revealed that education level was positively associated with coping strategies at a low level (r=.239, p< .01), while stress level was moderately positively associated with coping strategies (r=.555, p<.001). In addition, the presence of complications was significantly associated with coping strategies (χ² =5.415, df=1, p<.05). However, age, gender, duration of illness, and comorbidity were not significantly associated with coping strategies.
In conclusion, stress levels and complications were significantly associated with coping strategies among patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Healthcare providers should emphasize stress assessment and complication monitoring to promote appropriate coping strategies, thereby enhancing patients’ ability to manage their condition and adapt effectively.
