Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this qualitative research is: 1) to study homosexual / gay foreign tourists’ behavior, attitudes and motivation towards Pattaya city and 2) to identify the potential of Pattaya city being the ideal destination for these homosexual / gay tourists.
Samples were randomly selecting approximately 400 homosexual / gay foreigners within the research location. Questionnaires were handed out to collect data as the research tool. Moreover, the information collected was analyzed by descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Finally, the hypothesis testing was described using inferential statistics such as Chi-Square, T-test and the One way ANOVA or F-test and comparing the differences following Scheffe’s methods.
The study of this research found that homosexual / gay foreigns who travel to Pattaya City are mostly over 51 years of age and more than 50 percent are American citizens, and they are non-specify preference homosexual / gay. Meaning, they can be both ‘gay-king’ are ‘gay-queen’. Information collected from the questionnaire showed that over 50 percent graduated with at least bachelor degree levels, they were mostly retired but still earning an income of at least 40,000 baht per month. These homosexual / gay tourists also commented that Pattaya city was an ideal destination for homosexuals / gays and some of them travel to this destination up to four times a year.
Pattaya city can be classified as a designated tourist zone that could contains potentially disruptive foreign cultural influences within highly limited geographical spaces. This may provide Thai homosexuals / gays with places in which they can leave behind Thai old culture expectations without leaving Thailand. For this reason, the homosexual / gay tourists then can present positive attitudes towards Pattaya city given the low cost of living, easy to travel, and the activities that this city has to offer for them. The development of Pattaya city as containment zones for international tourism means they have emerged as spaces in which broader Thai cultural norms may be transgressed by both foreign and Thai tourists. As a result, this concludes that Pattaya city definitely has potential to be the ideal destination for the homosexual / gay tourists
