A STUDY ON SPORT ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION IN STUDENTS OF SOUTHERN SPORTS SCHOOL

Abstract
This research aimed to study the motivation for sport achievement of students in Southern Sports Schools and to compare the sport achievement motivation of the students who differed in personal information. The samples included 300 students in three sports schools in the southern region under the Institute of Physical Education, Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The samples were selected through the proportional stratified random sampling based on the
proportion of population in each school and by random sampling of the samples in each school. The instrument was the questionnaire with 3 parts. Part 1 was a checklist about the students’ personal information as gender, year of study, type of sports they practiced and participated in the competition, and experience at the national and international sporting events. Part 2 dealt with 5 level rating scale questionnaire on the sport motivation of students in the Southern Sports Schools. Part 3 asked questions about the opinions and suggestions of sport achievement motivation of students in the Southern Sports Schools. The data were analyzed by such statistics as arithmetic mean (), standard deviation (S.D.), t-test and F-test. The results of the research were found as the following: 1. Overall, the motivation for sport achievement of the students in the Southern Sport Schools, as perceived by the respondents, was at a high level. By individual aspects, however, it was found that the top three motivational motivations were: Self - responsibility was at a ‘very high’ level with the highest mean score, followed by personal uniqueness and the enthusiasm, which was at a ‘very high’ level and ambition was at a ‘very high’ level, with the lowest mean score. 2. A comparison of motivation on sport achievement of students who differed in personal information revealed as the following: Overall, the students who differed in gender showed a .05 significant difference in their motivation in sports.By individual aspects, they showed a .05 significant difference in their opinions on motivation and planning; male students showed a higher level of achievement motivation than female students. Overall and by individual aspects, respondents who differed in year of study, type of sports practiced and participated in the competition events, experience of participating in national
and international sporting competitions showed no significant difference in their level of sport achievement motivation.
