A STUDY OF THE SPORTS MOTIVATION OF ATHLETES REPRESENTING THE INSTITUTE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN SOUTHERN CAMPUSES AS PARTICIPANTS IN THE 43RD NATIONAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION GAMES

Abstract
The objectives of study were to examine the motivation of athletes representing the Institute of Physical Education in southern campuses who participated in the 43rd National Physical Education Games and to compare the motivation of these athletes classified by types of sport and campus. The samples consisted of 457 athletes. The quality of the instrument of research employed by the researcher was tested in respect to the index of consistency (IOC) by five experts. Moreover, its reliability at 0.75 was affirmed by employing Cronbach’s α (alpha) technique. A questionnaire was used as an instrument of research for collecting data from the samples concerning motivation in playing sports by these athletes. Using techniques of descriptive statistics, the researcher analyzed the data collected in terms of mean () and standard deviation (S.D.) A t-test technique and the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and Scheffe’s multiple comparison method were used for data analysis.
Findings were as follows:
- The sports motivation of the athletes overall and in each aspect was found at a moderate level, except the aspects of reputation and advancement which were found at a high level.
- The sports motivation of athletes from different campuses overall and in each aspect did not evince parallel differences.
- The sport motivation of the athletes in respect to individual sports and team sports did not reveal overall differences and in each aspect.
