DEVELOPMENT OF SPORT TOURISM MANAGEMENT MODEL IN CHIANG RAI PROVINCE: CASE STUDY OF CYCLING AND RUNNING

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to study a sport tourism management model, examine the relationships between sports tourism and community participation and investigate the behavior and motivation of sports tourists in Chiang Rai Province.The study was divided into 3 steps: 1) the sport tourism model were collected from secondary sources regarding websites, and others related to running and cycling activities. The finding revealed that cycling activities were mostly organized by private agencies, while running activities were organized by both private and public agencies, 2) the data of the relationships between sport tourism tourists and community participation were collected by in-depth interview in four aspects. The results were found that the communities did not participate in making decision to organize cycling and running events in their community, but they were involved in the procedure of the event organization, 3) the data of the relationship between tourist behavior and motivation were found firstly, most travelers came to Chiang Rai more than three times and spent more than three days for traveling by their own cars; secondly, they came to travel in Chiangrai with friends and they got travel information from various media; and thirdly, the reasons they came to travel were for relaxation rated at a highest level and for entertainment rated at a high level. Finally, the factors attracting them to travel were the beauty, the tranquility and the nature of tourist attractions which were rated at a highest level.
