Abstract

Background: Personal attributes such as gender, age, body mass index, marital status, education level, current working status of the elderly is related to physical, mental, economic and social wellbeing. The relationship between personal characteristics and wellbeing of the elderly in Pathumthani Province will lead to better understanding of the disease tendency, health care and for participation of the elderly in Pathum Thani Province. This study will be used as a database for Thammasat Thammarak Center to develop its service system.

Objective: To study the relationship between personal characteristics and wellbeing of the elderly in Pathum Thani Province.

Material and methods : Four hundred subjects were selected from elderly of age 60 years and over using multi-step sampling method. Data were collected using questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentage, mean, and correlation using Pearson's correlation coefficient statistics.

Result: The majority of the sample were female of age 60-65 years old, married, graduated in an elementary school of grade 2-6 and had economic working conditions with standard body mass index (BMI). The majority had cardiovascular disease . Physical well-being was self-aided. Mental wellbeing: no depression. Economic wellbeing: there were 1-2 households in the family who had sufficient income to cover expenses with no debt and no savings.  Social wellbeing: good family relationships, lived with a spouse, received help from friends /neighbors. They needed consultation from health care professionals, physician, and nurse. The elderly required the knowledge in self-care and elderly care and desired to reach the hospital as quickly as possible.

Conclusion: The study found a significant relationship between personal characteristics and well-being and also between educational factors and the psychological wellbeing of the elderly.
