Background: Understanding the factors that influence medical residents to specialize in general surgery can guide strategies to address workforce shortages and improve specialty training programs.
Objective: This study aim to identify the key factors influencing Thai surgical residents in selecting general surgery as their specialization.
Material & Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire distributed to general surgery residents from various training institutions across Thailand. Data collection occurred between August and December 2024.
Results: Among respondents, the most frequently cited reason for choosing general surgery was "alignment with personal lifestyle" (31.8%), followed by "having a role model to emulate" (22.7%). Other notable reasons included "addressing a shortage in the field" (13.6%) and "disinterest in other specialties" (13.6%). Additional factors such as anticipated income, low competition for residency spots, and lack of strong preference for other specialties each accounted for approximately 4.5% of responses.
Conclusions and Relevance: The findings highlight diverse motivations for pursuing general surgery, with lifestyle alignment and inspirational role models being the predominant factors. Tailoring recruitment and mentorship strategies to address these factors may enhance the appeal of general surgery as a career choice.
