The Development Clinical Nursing Practice Guideline for Fall Prevention in Hospitalized elderly Patients

Abstract

This action research study aimed to study the situation of falling, develop a model for fall prevention in hospitalized elderly Patients, and evaluate the effectiveness of the model to prevent falling. The sample was 13 nurses and 90 elderly Patients. Research instruments were the focus group discussion guidelines, the recording form of patients, the recording form of nurses, the satisfaction evaluation form, and the evaluation form for the use of the model. Content validity was examined by 3 experts with a content validity index of 1. Also, the inter-rater reliability was 95%. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics by percentage, mean, standard deviation, and content analysis. The research results are as follows. The situation of falling in hospitalized patients tends to be increasing. The contents of the model to prevent falls in hospitalized elderly patients consist of pain assessment, the set of nursing care for fall prevention, and providing practical nursing supervision. It was found that the nurses agree that there is a possibility of being used (  = 4.69, S.D.=0.48), and had a high level of satisfaction (  =4.48, S.D.=0.34). Patients receiving a model to prevent falling had not fallen. The result showed that the developed model to prevent falling is practical. This research can be applied to other organizations with similar contexts.
