This quasi-experimental study employed a two-group pretest-posttest design to investigate the effects of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) combined with the Silver-Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART) on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of preschool children in Ang Thong Subdistrict, Srinakarin District, Phatthalung Province. The participants comprised 60 preschool children aged 3-5 years with dental caries without pulpal involvement and their 60 parents. The participants were allocated by educational setting into an intervention group and a control group, with 30 children in each group. The intervention group received SDF application followed by glassionomer cement restoration using the SMART technique, whereas the control group received usual care. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and at the 1-month follow-up using an oral health status record form and the Thai version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (Thai-ECOHIS). Data were analyzed using Independent t-tests and Paired t-tests.
The results showed that, after the intervention, the overall oral health-related quality of life score in the experimental group decreased from baseline and was significantly lower than that of the control group (p-value < 0.05). Significant improvements were observed in the domains of child symptoms, child impact on daily activities, parental/family impact of the child’s oral health, and family functioning. In conclusion, the use of SDF combined with GIC restoration using the SMART technique can improve oral health-related quality of life among preschool children and may serve as an appropriate approach for managing dental caries in communities.
