Effectiveness of a Fall Prevention Model for Elderly by Applying Protection motivation Theory in Elderly Club, Rayong Province, Thailand

This research was purposed to study the effectiveness of a fall preventive model for elderly by applying protection motivation theory in elderly club, Rayong Province. The samples were people aged over 60 years and participated in elderly club, Rayong Province. They must pass over 12 scores of ADL evaluation. The samples were 112 elders who were divided in 56 cases of an experimental group and 56 cases of a control group. The data was collected by using a questionnaire and from a motion testing. The experimental cases were given on activities of fall prevention model for elderly by applying protection motivation theory in elderly for 6 weeks. The data was collected again after 6 weeks. The data was analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The comparation of physical preformation among two groups was analyzed by using t-test at 95% CI.
The results found that using the the fall prevention activities of the elderly applying the protection motivation theory showed a good effectiveness of knowledge and total recognition which an average score was significantly higher than pre-intervention (t = -4.827) and higher than the control group (t = 2.820, p<0.05). While the behaviors showed an average score higher than pre-intervention (t = -7.960), but the results were not different from the control group (t = 1.264). Thus, the family car team and the elderly club should apply the fall prevention model for elderly by applying protection motivation theory to use on assess of health behaviors, home visiting, preparing the environments of elderly at their home, and providing the appropriate assistance. Moreover, the establishment of day care centers for elderly in the community should be encouraged to take care of the elderly's health as "One Elderly Care Center One Tambon" by using the management of the community, local government organizations, and network partners in the area.
