Development of the Model of Applying the Moral Hospital Concept for Developing the Moral and Ethical Behaviors of Nursing Students

Abstract

This study was an action research, aiming to study the moral and ethical behaviors of the nursing students, and to study the results of the model of applying moral hospital concept for developing the moral and ethical behaviors among nursing students. The sample consisted of 102 second year nursing students of Srimahasarakham Nursing College. The research instruments were composed of an assessment form for moral and ethical behaviors, a record for small group discussion, a record of the lesson learned from the after action review, and the model of applying moral hospital concept. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-test, and content analysis.

The results revealed that: (1) most of the nursing students, 82. 4% , had their moral and ethical behaviors in the high level (Mean= 87.34, S.D.=9.36); (2) after using the model of applying moral hospital concept for developing the moral and ethical behaviors among nursing students, most of the nursing students, 95. 1 % , had the moral and ethical behaviors, as a whole, in the high level (Mean= 90.19, S.D.= 7.53) and it was significantly higher than before the development (t=2.48, p =0.015).

The lesson learned from the after action review revealed that the model of applying moral hospital concept for developing the moral and ethical behaviors had been beneficial for students, the college, the nursing profession, and for clients and communities. The nursing students were proud to have rendered beneficial services to clients. Moreover, nursing students had improved their moral and ethical behaviors through practical experience, especially on the aspect of sacrifice and service mind that were basic moral and ethical behaviors of the nursing profession. The clients were given humanized care from the nursing students; that results in better reputation and image of the college. Therefore, it can be regarded that the model of applying moral hospital concept is an efficient model that can be applied in development of moral and ethical behaviors of the nursing students.
