Proportion and Associated Factors with Hospital Admission Among Patients Under Home Isolation for COVID-19 in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Northeastern Thailand

The study aimed at examining the proportion of hospital admissions and associated factors among COVID-19 patients undergoing home isolation. The study design was a retrospective case-control study. The population consisted of 6,362 COVID-19 patients in home isolation during the period from January to April 2022. Retrospective data were collected from medical records.
The findings revealed that a majority of cases, comprising 6,262 patients (98.43%), successfully completed the 10-day home quarantine, while a minority of 110 cases (1.73%) required hospitalization. The average age of the samples was 36.18 years (SD = 15.66), and a substantial proportion (82.73%) had no pre-existing medical conditions. The primary sources of infection were identified as family or relatives (25.45%) and the workplace (20.73%). Factors associated with hospital admission, analyzed using multiple logistic regression, included heart disease (Adjusted OR = 9.54, 95%CI 2.18-41.71, p-value < 0.01), diabetes mellitus (Adjusted OR = 3.43, 95%CI 1.43-8.22, p-value < 0.01), fever (Adjusted OR = 13.89, 95%CI 6.29-30.69, p-value < 0.01) and dyspnea (Adjusted OR = 7.14, 95%CI 2.54 -20.04, p-value < 0.01).
The findings underscore the critical role of home isolation in efficiently managing a large volume of patients during public health emergencies, with no reported issues regarding patient safety. However, it is essential to emphasize close medical monitoring for patients with risk factors. Adequate preparation for emergency patient transfers is also of utmost importance.
