Abstract

Asthma is a common disease, affecting 3-5% of adults, and work-related asthma accounts for 15-25% of cases that develop during adulthood. Work-related asthma is preventable, and delayed diagnosis can lead to poor disease prognosis. Prompt diagnosis can help identify preventive measures to reduce severity and mortality rates. However, many studies show that occupational asthma is less frequently diagnosed than it occurs. The diagnosis criteria of work-related asthma varies across countries and standards. This article reviews knowledge from medical and legal perspectives to summarize and compile diagnostic guidelines for occupational asthma from various standards. It also gathers approaches for medical surveillance and entitlements that patients should receive. This comparative analysis can serve as valuable information for decision-making in diagnosis, benefiting occupational medicine physicians and specialists in occupational health, ultimately maximizing patient care outcomes.
