Development of Online Learning Material to Enhancing English Professional Communication in Pediatric Nursing Practicum for Nursing Students

Abstract

The research and development study aimed to: 1) Develop an online learning material to enhance English professional communication in Pediatric Nursing Practicum 2) Evaluate the effectiveness of the online learning material and 3) Evaluate the satisfaction with the online learning material. The study samples consisted of 205 nursing students, from the Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Nakhonratchasima, during the academic year 2023. 41 participants testing the efficiency of the online learning material (Line official Prom-Pre) were selected by simple random sampling, individual testing (3), group testing (8), and field testing (30). The effectiveness group, 164 nursing students used Line official Prom-Pre in Pediatric Nursing Practicum. The research instruments consisted of 1) Line official Prom-Pre 2) English achievement pretest and posttest (KR-20 = .74) 3) The professional English communication skill questionnaire (a = .91), and 4) The satisfaction questionnaire (a = .97). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and paired t-test.

The results of this study revealed that the online learning material included five components: manual of pediatric nursing, case reports, quiz, recommend handbooks, and Q&A. Line official Prom-pre had the efficiency and effectiveness index, which was higher than expected (80/80). Moreover, the mean score of knowledge on pediatric nursing after using the media (M = 19.08, S.D. = 1.56) was significantly higher than before using the media (M = 12.49, S.D. = 3.35) at the 0.05 level (t = -25.93, p = 0.001). The overall of professional English communication skills (M = 54.14, S.D. = 3.12) and the satisfaction on the online learning media were at high level (M = 3.97, S.D. = 0.52). Therefore, the Prom-pre, line official, learning English program can be applied to develop enhancing English professional communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English among nursing students. The suggestion is that health professionals should independently develop their professional English communication competency by using Line official Prom-Pre to communicate effectively with clients.
