Abstract

Objectives: This research aims to describe factors of predicting mental health status among nursing students. Methods: Predictive correlational research was applied. The sample comprised 100 nursing students, studying the first to fourth years. The research instruments consisted of 7 parts: 1) a demographic questionnaire, 2) Thai General Health Questionnaire-28 (Thai GHQ-28), 3) a questionnaire on adaptation towards studying, 4) a questionnaire on attitude towards nursing care, 5) a questionnaire on the relationship between students and parents, 6) a questionnaire on the relationship between students and friends, and 7) a questionnaire on the relationship between students and lecturers. The content validity of all questionnaires was examined by three experts. The reliabilities of part 2-7 yielded Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of .82 .77 .72 .83 .88 and .87 respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the predictability of the selected factors was analyzed using multiple regression. Results: The result showed that predictive factors could explained variances of mental health status of nursing students for 25.90% (R2 = .259, p < .05). For consideration, the significant predicting factor was attitude towards nursing care (β = -.241, t = -2.279, p < .05). Conclusion: The result of this research could be used as basic information to improve mental health status among nursing students. The issue of attitude towards nursing care should be considered.
