Effect of Modify Motivational Enhancement Therapy Program on Readiness and Treatment Acceptance of Substance-Use Patients in Initial Treatment

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this research was to examine the effects of modified motivational enhancement therapy on behavioral change by examining readiness and treatment acceptance of substance-use patients in initial treatment. Methods: Purposive sampling was used to select sixteen patients who received therapy at the mental health room, out-patient department of Tharongchang Hospital, Surat Thani province. Research instruments consisted of 1) the modified program for motivational enhancement therapy, 2) the stages of change of readiness and treatment scale assessment questionnaires, and 3) manual for stopping substance use. The questionnaire was validated by 7 experts and tested for reliability yielding a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .82. Data were analyzed and using descriptive statistic and repeated measures ANOVA, Results: Repeated measures ANOVA analysis showed significantly different of score of readiness and treatment acceptance (F(2, 30) = 224.10, p < .05) The mean scores of post-test immediately (M = 87.56, SD = 6.57) and after 4 weeks (M = 83.62, SD = 8.42) were higher than in the pre-test period (M = 51.06, SD = 10.26). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that modified motivational enhancement therapy could improve change readiness and treatment acceptance of substance-use patients. Thus the nurses should apply this program to enhance readiness and treatment acceptance in substance-use patients.
