Abstract

Objective: This descriptive research aimed to describe the purpose in life among vulnerable people. Methods: Participants were 393 vulnerable people living in urban and semi-urban areas in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province who encountered the COVID-19 situation between June and December 2021 recruited through purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. The instruments consisted of 1) demographic data, and 2) the Purpose in Life questionnaire developed by Balthip, Suwanphahu and Laimek. All instruments were validated for content validity by three experts. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .96. The demographic data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the factors related to purpose in life were analyzed using chi-square statistics. Results: The result shows that 95.67% of vulnerable people had a high level of purpose in life. When analyzing the relationship of demographic data to purpose in life, it was found that age, number of family members, congenital disease, and the source of support were significantly associated with purpose in life among vulnerable people (p < .05). Conclusion: The results of the study can be used as information for health care personnel to plan nursing care and develop programs to support the purpose in life of vulnerable people after experiencing the outbreak of COVID-19.
