Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to develop and examine online case-based learning model and designing play activities for sick children in pediatric nursing practice during COVID-19 pandemic Method: Research and development is divided into 3 phases; phase 1: situation and requirement of learning management was analyzed; phase 2: developing an online case-based learning model and designing play activities for sick children, phase 3: evaluating effectiveness of the learning model. The subjects were 60 fourth-year nursing students enrolled Practicum in Pediatric Nursing course. The research instruments were: 1) the learning model consisted of a teaching management and evaluation manual, case study, worksheet and learning guide for students, case discussion evaluation form, and play designing evaluation form; 2) the satisfaction of learning model questionnaire. Content validity was determined and the content validation index was .96. Reliability of the questionnaire was checked by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, yielding the values of .95. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The learning model consisted of three processes through the online platform; 1) the preparation process to prepare learning materials, instructors, and students; 2) the learning management processes were 2.1) analysis and planning stage 2.2) sharing of learning outcomes stage 2.3) summarize and report the results stage; and 3) evaluating learning outcomes process. After implementing the learning model, the students satisfied with the learning model in high level (M = 4.30, SD = .55). Conclusion: An online case-based learning model and designing play activities for sick children can be used to substitute case discussion and play activities for sick children in clinical pediatric nursing practice for nursing students during COVID-19 pandemic.
