Insomnia, Related Factors and Nurse’s Roles in Insomnia Management Among End Stage Renal Disease Patients

บทคัดย่อ

Insomnia is a common symptom among end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. This article aimed
to review the current evidence on insomnia, related factors and nurses’ roles in insomnia management among
ESRD patients. Insomnia is divided into 2 types based on its duration including: (1) insomnia of a short duration
and (2) chronic insomnia. Factors related to insomnia in ESRD patients were comorbid condition, anemia,
hypoalbuminemia, pruritus, bone pain, and depression. Insomnia affects body, emotion, mind, and quality of life
of the patients. Thus, nurses have vital roles in insomnia management in ESRD patients to help the patients to
improve sleep and quality of life. Nursing management should focus on providing physical comfort, psychological
management, and pharmacological management.
