Abstract

Abstract: The purposes of this study were to determine the operating unit costs of outpatient and inpatient services, to compare the health personel workload and to analyze the bed usage efficiency of community hospital in Nongbualamphu Provice, from the provider’s perspective. The data were collected from the reports of annual operating expenditures in the fiscal year 2008 by using the data collection form and were analyzed by descriptive statistics.Theresults showed that in the fiscal year 2008, the total operating cost of all 5 community hospital in Nongbualamphu Provice was 276.21 million bath. The average operating cost for 30 bed-hospitals was 43.20 million bath, and 60 bed-hospitals was 73.29 million bath. The average operating unit costs of outpatient services of 30 and 60 bed-hospitals were 425.32 and 375.18 bath/visit respectively, where the mean was 405.26 bath/visit. The average operating unit costs of inpatient services of 30 and 60 bed-hospitals were 5,954.48 and 5,252.52 bath/case respectively, where the mean was 5,763.64 bath/case. Nawang hospital had the lowest health personel workload of physicians, pharmacists, and professional nurse. The physician workload of Naklang hospital was 2.44 times of Nawang. Pharmacist workload and the professional nurse workload of Sriboonruang hospital were 2.30 and 1.42 times compared to Nawang hospital. The bed usage efficiency of community hospital analysis revealed that 2 hospitals had occupancy rate and bed turnover rate over 100 percent which means that these hospitals had increased beds beyond the official bed-limitation of Ministry of Public Health, while the rest (2 hospitals) had occupancy rate and bed turnover rate under 100 percent.Theadministrator should consider the findings of this study as part of the data in decision making for future public health resources allocation in order to achieve the use of public health resources efficiently.
