Abstract
Eleven cases of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis from October 2003 to July 2006 were analyzed. Therewere eight males and three females with the mean age of 54.4 years ( ranged 14 to 73 years). The mean durationof symptoms were 3 weeks ( ranged 1 day to 3 months). Predisposing factors to infection were found in 4 patients ( 36%). Spondylodiscitis was the most common type of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis ( 63.6%). Staphylococcusepidermidis was the most common causative organism. Seven patients ( 63.6%) had fever and most of them showedlimitation of back motion and tenderness on the spine. Leukocytosis was found in 7 patients ( 63.6%) ESR was levated in 10 patients ( 90.9%) and abnormal MRI was documented in all patients. Parenteral antibiotics and/or surgicaltreatment were given and all had favorable outcomes with no complication of surgery. Pathologic examinations aftersurgical treatment were confirmed diagnosis as vertebral osteomyelitis in all 9 cases. Nine atients returned to workwith full competency but occasional episode of mild back pain. One case had back pain and interfered with dailywork. No recurrence of the diseases after the sixth month of follow-up.
