The Physical Activity Level and Its Related Factors among the Community-Dwelling Elderly in the Second Regional Health

Abstract

Background: Sufficient physical activity (PA) can reduce risk of non-communicating diseases. However, several factors involved in individual PA. Nowadays, evidence of PA in Thai older adults is less, and previous research did not include all of factors. Objective: to assess PA levels, to investigate correlation between PA and factors related to PA, and to find PA predicted factors among the community-dwelling elderly in the second regional health. Method: Four hundred and one elderly which aged 60 years and over in Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, and Uttaradit provinces were recruited to take part in this study. Participants were evaluated PA level by using Thai version of Global Physical Activity Questionnaire version 2, and interviewed 5 factors related PA, including sociodemographic, physical health, cognitive and mental health, environmental, and social factors. Correlation analysis was performed by using Chi-squared or Spearman's correlation. Then binary logistic regression was used to find PA predicted factors. Result: 78.8% of participants met recommend PA, and sedentary behavior was 180 minutes/day. Factors that showed a significant association with PA level were age, marital status, work, income, alcohol drinking, exercise, hand grip strength, fear of falling, depression, cognition, number of house storeys, exercise place in living area, family role, social role, and social participation. Moreover, age, work, exercise, number of house storeys and family role could predict the PA level. Conclusion: Most elderly had enough PA, and all groups of factors related PA level.
