Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the relationships among grief, quality of dying and death, family support, and duration of caregiving among bereaved family caregivers of patients with non-cancer chronic diseases. The conceptual framework of this study was based on grief and loss frameworks. A purposive sampling method was utilized to recruit 86 bereaved primary family caregivers of patients with non-cancer chronic diseases who were admitted to secondary Bangkok metropolitan hospitals. Four instruments were employed to collect data: 1) the participant demographic data form; 2) the quality of dying and death questionnaire; 3) the family APGAR questionnaire, and 4) the inventory of complicated grief. The reliability of the questionnaires was established with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients and ranged from .92 to .93. Descriptive statistics and Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient were utilized to analyze the data. The results showed no significant correlation between grief and the quality of dying and death (r=-.117, p>.05), family support (r=-.161, p>.05), or duration of caregiving (r=.029, p>.05). Nonetheless, 23 relatives (27%) experienced grief, although 60.5% of relatives were mentally prepared for the patient’s death and received high levels of family support (Mean=14.84, SD=4.21). Furthermore, the perceived quality of dying and death was at a moderate level (Mean=59.33, SD=16.67). Consequently, the findings of this study may serve as fundamental information for end-of-life care and support for patients and their families.
