Factors Related to Fall Prevention Behaviors among Older Adults in Rural Communities, Yang Sisurat District, Mahasarakam Province

Abstract
This descriptive research aimed to determine the risk of fall, fall prevention behavior and factor related to fall prevention behavior amongst the elderly people in rural communities, in Yang Sisurat District, Maha Sarakham Province. The study was conducted on 374 elderlies over 60 years of age, multi-stage randomized sampling was used, data was collected from August to September 2020. The research measurements are general questionnaire, risk of fall questionnaire, biological assessment form and risk of fall in elderlies’ assessment form. The Content Validity Index for scale (S-CVI) was .95, reliability between .71 to .99, descriptive analysis and Chi-Square were analyzed with p-value <.05. The result of this study has determined that elderly people have a risk of falling of 16.3%, most elderly people have a fall prevention behavior at a good level (74.3%). Concerning the factors related to fall prevention behavior in the elderly people in rural communities, it has been determined that the ability to carry out daily activities and having a primary caregiver were related to the fall prevention behavior. From the research results, community nurses in primary care units should assess the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and organize activities or intervention for specific groups to enhance the self-care ability of the elderly people about exercise, adjusting the environment that suitable for the elderly and promote families or caregivers’ knowledge about the fall prevention to support older people who are at risk of falling.
