Abstract

Currently, physical therapy is an essential component of caregivers in the care of dependent elderly persons. If caregivers cannot perform care correctly and comprehensively, it may have an impact on the health of the elderly persons. Therefore, the researchers applied Bandura's concept of self - efficacy to develop a program to investigate the effectiveness of the program on the knowledge, practices and expectation of elderly persons regarding physical therapy of caregivers in Tambon Takasem, Meuang District, Sa kaeo Province. A quasi - experimental study was conducted on a single group, using the purposive sampling method. The sample group consisted of 20 caregivers who had undergone 70 hours of training, had at least 1 year of experience in caring for elderly persons, and are able to participate in the program throughout the research. Data were collected through interviews and observations about –before the program, –at the conclusion of the program, and –12 weeks after the end of the program. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and repeated measures ANOVA. The results showed that the average score of the caregivers after the program for knowledge, practice, and self - efficacy expectations were significantly higher than –that of before the program at the .05 level of significance. In addition, the score was slightly higher after the program than at the follow - up period. Satisfaction score of relatives and older persons for caregivers were at a high level, with a satisfaction rate of 100%. In conclusion, the developed program resulted in an improvement of self - perceived abilities through successful experiences.
