Health Service Utilization Behaviors and Quality of Care
Perceived by Foreigners Living In Thailand

Abstract
Enhancing the quality and equality of health care services has been globally highlighted for many decades. Understanding health service utilization behaviors and perceived quality of care of foreigners living in Thailand will provide concrete information to promote quality in health services for all, especially when Thailand is aiming to be the medical hub of Asia. A descriptive research design was conducted to investigate health service utilization behaviors and perceived quality of care. The formula of Taro Yamane was performed to identify the sample size of 400 foreigners. A convenience sampling technique was used to recruit foreigners temporary or permanently living in Thailand and residing in the Bangkok Metropolitan area. The instrument used was a self administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was content validated by 3 experts and reliability tested with a Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.935.. The data were analyzed using percentage and mean.
The results revealed that the majority of the samples had no congenital disease (89%), never been ill within the past 6 months, had direct experience of using health services in Thailand (60.75%), used services at out-patients departments (61.73%) and private hospitals (54.75%). A majority of them received health information by word of mouth. Most of them had a high level of satisfaction with health services(= 3.80, S.D. = 0.50). Lower levels of satisfaction were rated for coordination and provision of information (= 3.34, SD = 0.64 and = 3.27, SD = 0.64, respectively). The results of this study suggest that the health care settings and educational institutions can use this information to improve the quality of care regarding coordination by introducing simple steps to get care and increase competency of the health care personnel for English communication and this will help prepare Thailand to become a medical hub of Asia.
