Abstract

Background: Knee osteoarthritis in elderly can be prevented and slowed down the disease if early screening is provided. Elderly care of knee osteoarthritis by health care workers is not comprehensive. Therefore, the potential development in elderly care with knee osteoarthritis for health volunteers in a community can increase extensive healthcare coverage. Objective: This study aimed to compare health volunteers’ knowledge and skills in elderly care with knee osteoarthritis before and after training, and to assess the accuracy of health volunteers’ screening results of knee osteoarthritis and giving healthcare advice for the elderly. Methods: The present study was divided into 2 steps: 1) performed a quasi-experimental study with one group pretest-posttest design involving a potential development program for 16 health volunteers and 2) assessed the result of the health volunteer potential development. Each health volunteer screened 20 elderly persons, then returned the screening results to researcher for re-evaluation.Results: There was a statistically significant increase of median scores in all aspects of knowledge and skills of health volunteers in potential development after the completing program. The sample group had 84.69 percent accuracy in knee osteoarthritis screening and more than 80 percent accuracy in giving healthcare advice. Conclusion: The knowledge, skills and competence in elderly care with knee osteoarthritis of health volunteers have improved after participating in the potential development program. This training program should be applied for health volunteers in order to enhance quality of elderly care within a community.
