Abstract

Background: One impact of medication use on dental patients is the occurrence of drug-related problems, especially in dental hospital that admit inpatients. This combined with the increasing trend of medication use, leads to a higher likelihood of drug-related issues. Objectives: To study the drug-related problems encountered in inpatients of a dental hospital and the factors that may contribute to the occurrence of such problems in this patient group. Methods: This research is a case-control study. We collected data from electronic medical records and related documents of dental inpatients who were admitted to the Dental Hospital, Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University, between 2022 and 2023, 1,011 patients to explore drug-related problems. The relationship between drug-related problems and other factors was analyzed by the logistic regression analysis. Results: The incidence of drug-related problems in this study was 2.67%. The most common category of drug-related problems was inappropriate duration. The logistic regression analysis showed a relationship between admission duration > 3 days and DRPs (p-value = .012). Conclusions: Drug-related problems in dental inpatients are mostly associated with the duration of medication administration. In most cases, the length of hospital stay may be related to the occurrence of drug-related problems.
