Prevalences and Associated Factors for Falls Among Elderly People: Health Area 7

Background: Thailand has entered an aging society, where falls are a common and serious health concern among older adults. Falls can significantly impact physical health, mental well-being, and the quality of life of both older individuals and their families. Objective: This study aimed to assess the risk of falling, the prevalence of falls, and associated factors among older adults in “Fall-Free Healthy Elderly Model Subdistricts” within Health Region 7. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between January and February 2022. Data were collected from 4,040 elderly individuals across four subdistricts in four provinces. Trained village health volunteers screened participants using the Health Assessment Test. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used for analysis, with a significance level of p < .05. Results: The prevalence of falls was 9.9% within the past six months. Mobility impairment (Adjusted OR 2.00, 95%CI: 1.52, 2.64) polypharmacy (Adjusted OR 1.72, 95%CI: 1.31, 2.25) urinary incontinence (Adjusted OR 1.63, 95% CI: 1.26, 2.10) visual problems (Adjusted OR 1.41, 95%CI: 1.10, 1.82) and abnormal blood pressure (Adjusted OR 1.01, 95%CI: 1.00, 1.02) were significant associated with falls. Conclusion: These findings highlight the need for an integrated, community-based approach to fall prevention in older adults. Health promotion strategies and environmental modifications tailored to the context of each community are essential for reducing fall risk and improving the well-being of the aging population.
