The effectiveness of group empowerment program on caregivers of the elderly with dementia

Abstract
Objective: To study the effectiveness of an empowerment program on caregivers of the elderly with dementia.
Materials and method: A quasi-experimental research with repeated measures design was conducted using a randomized sample of caregivers of the elderly with dementia. In the experimental group, 20 people received 4-sessions empowerment program with activities occurring once a week for 4 weeks, each session lasting 60-90 minutes. In the control group, 20 people received the usual counseling and psychosocial therapy. Data were collected using a measure of empowerment and an assessment of caring for the elderly. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of covariance and one-way analysis of variance with repeated measures.
Results: The group receiving the empowerment program had higher mean scores of both perceived empowerment and the assessment of caring for the elderly than before the experiment. Both scores were also higher than the counseling and psychosocial therapy group. In a one-month follow-up period, both groups decreased 1.0% and 9.3%, respectively, in their average empowerment scores. The average elderly care practice score increased 3.50% and 6.50%, respectively.
Conclusion: Completing the 4-week program can increase the empowerment and ability to take care of the elderly with dementia. The healthcare team can use the empowerment program as a guide to enhance the capacity of caregivers periodically and continuously, providing confidence and encouragement in caring for the elderly
