The purposes of this research were to investigate the feasibility of a self-management promotion program on health behaviors, blood pressure level, blood sugar level and waist circumference among older persons with metabolic syndrome. Sample were 10 older persons with metabolic syndrome. Instruments used consists of the health behavior assessment form, the digital blood pressure monitor, the blood glucose meter, the waist tape measure, and a self-management promotion program. Samples was received 10 activities of the self-management promotion program for 6 sessions. Data were collected at pretest and posttest after the intervention 8 weeks. The statistics used in this research were frequency, percentage and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.
Result revealed that the sample had mean scores of a health behavior significantly higher than those before program participation (p < .01). The mean scores of systolic blood pressure and the mean scores of diastolic blood pressure were significantly less than those before program participation (p < .01). The mean scores of blood sugar level was significantly less than those before program participation (p < .05) and the mean scores of waist circumference of the sample at posttest period was not significantly different from pre-experimental period. It was concluded that the self-management promotion program could improve the health behaviors, blood pressure, and blood sugar of the older adults with metabolic syndrome. Further experimental research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the program in larger target subjects.
