Abstract

Abstract
This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effects of the program
to promote safe eating in stroke patients on family caregivers’ knowledge, self-efficacy,
outcome expectation of their care, and family caregivers’ satisfaction with the program,
and safe eating in stroke patients. The program was developed based on Bandura’s Self-
Efficacy theory. The fifty family caregivers of the stroke patients were recruited by
purposive sampling, and divided into 25 in the control group and 25 in the experimental
group. The control group received regular nursing care whereas the experimental group
received the program lasted for 3 day. The effect of the program was evaluated when
the caregivers completed the questionnaires before and at 48 hours and 2nd week after
the program. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and two-factor repeated
measures design with repeated measure on one measure factor. The results revealed that
family caregivers in the experimental group had significantly higher score on knowledge
and perceived self-efficacy than those in the control group both at 48 hours and at 2nd
week after the program. However, there was no significant difference in outcome
expectation and caregivers’ satisfaction between the experimental group and the control
group. On the 2nd week of follow up, two of the samples in the control group had
readmitted to the hospital as a consequence of aspiration pneumonia, whereas no one in
the experimental group had readmitted, which signified safe eating in the stroke patients.
