Endodontic Retreatment of a Mandibular Molar: a case report
Keywords:
endodontic retreatment, mandibular molarAbstract
The goals of nonsurgical retreatment are to remove materials from the root canal space and if present, address deficiencies or repair defects that are pathologic or iatrogenic in origin. Endodontic failures can be attributable to inadequacies in shaping, cleaning and obturation, iatrogenic events, or re-infectionof the root canal system when the coronal seal is lost after completion of root canal treatment. Regardless of the etiology, the sum of all causes is leakage and bacterial contamination.
A 45 years old male patient was referred by a general practitioner for endodontic retreatment of the first mandibular molar (#36). He reported with pain. History revealed that patient had a root canal treatment about 5 years ago.Intraoral periapical radiograph confirmed that the patient had a deficient previous root canal treatment on the mandibular molar with incomplete root canal fillings.Diagnosis is # 36 endodontically treated tooth with chronic
apical periodontitis. The recommended treatment plan was to attempt nonsurgical retreatment. When the patient was reviewed after three months, there was not any abnormality detected radiologically and clinically. The patient was referred back to his dentist for permanent restoration.
