Abstract

Background: Colposcopy with cervical biopsy is a procedure associated with pain. Identifying effective and safe methods for pain reduction is therefore important.
Objective: To compare the effectiveness of oral etoricoxib and topical lidocaine spray in reducing pain during colposcopy with cervical biopsy.
Methods: This randomized controlled trial included 120 women, who were equally allocated into two groups: an oral etoricoxib group administered prior to the procedure, and a lidocaine spray group. Pain was assessed using a numeric rating scale at baseline, during the procedure, and 10 minutes after the procedure. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test for comparison between two groups.
Results: The primary outcome was pain during biopsy. There was no statistically significant difference between the etoricoxib and lidocaine spray groups (p = 0.242). Pain scores at 10 minutes after the procedure were also not significantly different (p = 0.319). No significant differences were observed in changes in pain scores over time (during biopsy vs. baseline, p = 0.112; post-procedure vs. baseline, p = 0.292). Additionally, the proportion of patients reporting no pain during the procedure was not significantly different between groups (68.3% vs. 80.0%; p = 0.211).
Conclusion: Oral etoricoxib and topical lidocaine spray provide comparable effectiveness in reducing pain during colposcopy with cervical biopsy. The choice of method may depend on convenience, safety, and clinical context.
