ภาวะ Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) เป็นสาเหตุของลำไส้เล็กอุดตัน ที่พบได้ไม่บ่อย เกิดจากมุมระหว่างหลอดเลือดแดง superior mesenteric และหลอดเลือดแดง aorta แคบลง มีผลให้ลำไส้เล็กดูโอดีนัมส่วนที่สามถูกกด มักมาด้วยอาการของภาวะกระเพาะอาหารอุดตันและอาเจียนมีน้ำดี หรืออาจมาด้วยอาการไม่จำเพาะ จำเป็นต้องนึกถึงภาวะนี้ในการวินิจฉัยแยกโรค การตรวจทางรังสีวิทยาช่วยยืนยันการวินิจฉัย เช่น การตรวจพิเศษทางรังสีของกระเพาะอาหาร (upper GI study), เอกซเรย์คอมพิวเตอร์ช่องท้องร่วมกับสารทึบรังสี (CT whole abdomen with contrast) โดยทั่วไปภาวะนี้ตอบสนองดีต่อการรักษาแบบประคับประคอง
รายงานฉบับนี้นำเสนอกรณีศึกษา ผู้ป่วยหญิงอายุ 21 ปี มาด้วยอาการอาเจียนมาก และน้ำหนักลดอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ตรวจเพิ่มเติมพบว่ามุมระหว่าง aorta และ superior mesenteric artery แคบลง มีผลกดลำไส้เล็กดูโอดีนัมส่วนที่สาม ผู้ป่วยรายนี้ตอบสนองดีต่อการรักษาแบบประคับประคองในช่วงแรก แต่ 2 สัปดาห์หลังจากนั้น ผู้ป่วยมีอาการท้องอืดและอาเจียนมากขึ้น กินอาหารได้น้อยลง จึงกลับมาโรงพยาบาลอีกครั้ง มีแผนการรักษาที่จะทำการผ่าตัดต่อลำไส้ (duodenojejunostomy) อย่างไรก็ตามผู้ป่วยมีอาการติดเชื้อในกระแสเลือด ร่วมกับมีภาวะช็อค จึงไม่สามารถทำการผ่าตัดได้ หลังจากนั้นผู้ป่วยได้เสียชีวิตลงในที่สุด
