Abstract

Background: Eczema is the most common diagnosis at the Institute of Dermatology. In 2005, 429 out of 1,257 eczema patients went through the patch test of which 102 had facial dermatitis. Of those with facial dermatitis, 60 (58%) were patch tested positive. Most of the positive results were caused by Nickel; however, there are still many patients where the causes are unknown. There are many reports on house dust mite and eczema, as well as house dust mite with atopic dermatitis. This research is about the relationship of house dust mite and facial dermatitis in atopic dermatitis patients.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship of house dust mite and facial dermatitis in atopic dermatitis patients.

Materials and Methods: Patch test to standard allergen and Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus was done in atopic dermatitis patients with facial dermatitis.

Results: There were 30 patients included in this study. 25 patients (84%) shown positive patch test reaction to Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. After providing advice about cleaning their bedrooms, carpets and avoiding areas with dust, 17 patients (57%) demonstrated clinical improvement . For standard allergens, the most common allergens found were Nickel and fragrance.

Conclusions: Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus allergy should be considered in patients with atopic dermatitis and facial dermatitis. Providing advice about cleaning their bedrooms, carpets and avoiding areas with dust can help to make their rashes improve.
