Biophysical properties in different body areas of adult-onset atopic dermatitis patients

Background: Skin bioengineering studies in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients indicated skin barrier dysfunction. Most studies were performed in children and adult AD related to the early-onset AD extending to adult life. There still lack of information in adult-onset atopic dermatitis (AAD).
Objectives: To investigate the biophysical properties and skin barrier defects of clinically normal skin in AAD patients and compare with healthy subjects.
Methods: Twenty-six participants including 13 AAD patients in remission and 13 controls were enrolled. The measured parameters were collected from 27 skin regions including transepidermal water loss, stratum corneum hydration, skin pH, skin surface lipids and skin roughness.
Results: No significant difference between cases and controls was found in all parameters.
Conclusion: It is possible that biophysical properties of skin of AAD patients during remission period are similar to healthy subjects. Further study in a large sample size is suggested.
