Abstract

Melasma is characterized by brown patches on the face and neck. The actual cause of melasma is still undetermined. However, it is believed that genetics, ultraviolet light and hormones i.e. estrogen and progesterone play role in the pathogenesis of melasma. At present, the best topical treatment for melasma is hydroquinone. Unfortunately, there are multiple side effects with the prolonged use of high concentration of hydroquinone. As a result, there are numerous researches regarding topical melasma treatment with varieties of natural products. Among plant extracts, mulberry showed the ability to inhibit tyrosinase enzyme in melanogenesis. To the best of our knowledge, there is no controlled report regarding the use of mulberry extract. We hereby report a randomized double-blinded vehicle-controlled study of topical 5% mulberry cream.
