Efficacy of aloe vera cream in prevention and treatment of sunburn and suntan

Abstract

The efficacy of aloe vera cream in prevention of ultraviolet burn and tan were studied in 20 volunteers. The minimal erythema dose were tested, rage 40-60 mj. The well preserved containing 70% of aloe vera cream was applied on the test sites randomized double blind technique 20 minutes before, immediately after, or both before and after UVB exposure compare to placebo. The serial irradiation, UVB 40,50,60,70,80 mj were radiated. Then MED was reading at 24 hour for sunburn evaluation. The 70% aloe vera cream and placebo were continually applied twice daily for the next 3 weeks by randomized double blind technique. The end results were obtained by scoring 1-4 for MED at 24 hour and pigmentation at week 1, week 2 and week 3. The result showed that the aloe vera cream has no sunburn or suntan protection and no efficacy in sunburn treatment when compared to placebo. The radiated skin which was continuously applied aloe vera cream for 3 weeks duration found that the aloe vera cream has no bleaching effect too.
